FBI: Man gives teller ID before robbing
bank Aug 13, 12:54 AM (ET)
ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) - A 34-year-old man is in custody after authorities say he gave a teller his
account number and showed her his picture ID before robbing an Anchorage bank.
The FBI says Jarell Paul Arnold of Anchorage is being held on federal bank robbery charges.
The FBI alleges Arnold walked into an Alaska USA Federal Credit Union branch Friday and inquired
about the balance on his account. The teller asked for his name, account number and ID.
Authorities say he complied, and then handed over a receipt with a note on the back that said he
had a gun and demanded money.
The FBI says he got away with about $600. Authorities arrested Arnold on Monday. A message left
after business hours Wednesday with Arnold's public defender, Michael Dieni, was not immediately
returned.
Court records say Arnold was sentenced to 57 months in prison for bank robbery in 2004.

CASPER, Wyo. (AP) - Police arrested a suspected car thief they found asleep in the 2001 Oldsmobile he's

about six miles from where it was stolen.

the woman faces charges.
An arrest warrant affidavit said he told officers the car had been sitting outside a liquor store,
unlocked with the keys in the ignition.
Former Colo. worker says love made her steal
$11M
Jul 16, 10:34 PM (ET)
DENVER (AP) - A former Colorado Department of Revenue supervisor says love
for her ex-boyfriend led her to steal $11 million in unclaimed tax refunds from the
state.
The ex-boyfriend, Hysear Randell, is on trial in Denver this week on charges of theft, forgery,
computer crime and racketeering.
On Wednesday, Michelle Cawthra testified that she deposited unclaimed tax refunds and other
money in Randell's bank accounts over two years by forging documents and creating fake businesses. She said
she frequently used computer passwords of other workers so she wouldn't be detected.
"I did things I don't think I otherwise would have done had I not been in love with him," she
testified.
Randell, who is married, is accused of using the money to pay for delinquent child support,
land deals, diamond jewelry, cars and business ventures.
Aside from some jewelry and trips, Cawthra, 32, said she didn't benefit from the money she
stole.
Defense lawyer Scott Reisch said Randell, 42, thought the money was coming from a Cawthra
family trust fund. He argued Cawthra tried to use the money to lure Randell away from his wife, Trudy
Randell, who is accused of helping create bank accounts for the scheme. She has pleaded guilty to theft but
has not yet been sentenced.
Cawthra said she didn't have a trust fund. She said she tried to get Randell to leave his wife
but said he knew the money was coming from the state.
Cawthra is serving a 24-year prison term after pleading guilty to racketeering. She testified
as part of a plea deal with prosecutors that could help reduce her sentence.
Lynn Kimbrough, spokeswoman for the Denver district attorney, said authorities recovered
$49,000 in assets when Randell was arrested and have found and frozen another $700,000 in assets.

Dimwitted thieves steal fake cell phones in Mexico
MORELIA, Mexico (AP) - Call it the case of the dead cells - both telephones and the ones in the brain.
Employees at a Telefonica Movistar cell-phone store in Morelia, Mexico say they arrived Tuesday morning to find
that the store had been broken into.
An examination of the shop revealed the only items missing were hollow replica phones for display that are
completely useless for making calls.
Employees say the clueless thieves overlooked real cell phones and cash in another part of the shop.
Store owners nonetheless reported the theft to local police, who are investigating.

CAPE CORAL, Fla. (AP) - Authorities are looking for a shoplifter who was run over twice by her

Bang for his buck: Man sunk by gun in bag of coins Feb 20, 8:39 PM (ET)
CAMDEN, Ark. (AP) - If only he had remembered to take the pistol out of a sack of nickels he
brought to a bank, he may have remained free and not become a suspect in a recent burglary. An 18-year-old man
entered the BancorpSouth branch Wednesday to change $88 worth of nickels to paper money, Camden police said. After
spotting the gun, the teller told a supervisor, who called police.
After police questioned him, they had cause to obtain a search warrant for his home, where they
found $16,000 worth of allegedly stolen property, including eight firearms. Camden police Capt. Scott Rosson said
many of the nickels were from a stolen coin collection.
The Ouachita County Jail said Friday that the man was charged with resisting arrest and possession
of a firearm. Police were investigating the burglary aspect of the case. The jail didn't have information on his
bond.
Rosson said the man had no intention of robbing the bank. The .44-caliber handgun was not loaded but ammunition for
the gun was also in the bag. Police said the man planned to sell the gun at a pawn shop.
